In May 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz made history when he purchased two large pizzas from Papa John’s for 10,000 bitcoins, about $30. Today, that same purchase would equate to more than $560 million.

In just the past year, cryptocurrency’s total value has skyrocketed by nearly 500%. And Bitcoin, which was worth less than a penny when it launched, hit a high of $61,683 per coin last week. Here’s an introduction to this mysterious currency and how it works.

WHAT IS CRYPTOCURRENCY?Cryptocurrency is virtual money based on software. When you purchase cryptocurrency, you purchase a digital asset based on an algorithm.

It’s virtual money represented as tokens. Your token represents a specific amount of cryptocurrency you own based on the current market value. You can sell that token, or you can cash it out at market value.

Unlike centralized currency, which is government controlled, cryptocurrency is decentralized. Its value is controlled by the network based on supply and demand.

TOP 10 CRYPTOCURRENCIESAccording to the nonprofit news organization Marketplace.org, there are more than 7,800 cryptocurrencies in existence and more are popping up all the time. Here are the top 10 based on total value.

HOW CRYPTOCURRENCY WORKSMost cryptocurrencies run on the power of blockchain technology. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies couldn’t exist without this technology and the “miners” who verify the transactions.

(1) When you buy or transfer cryptocurrency, your money goes into your digital wallet (account) to fund the currency, or virtual tokens, via an exchange such as CoinBase or Gemini.

(2) All transactions are verified through a peer-to-peer network of computers that participate in the mining, or verification, process.

(3) Miners work with networks of very powerful computers to audit or solve the complex mathematical matching that ensures the legitimacy of transactions (proof of work).

(4) When 1 megabyte of data is verified (mined), it creates a block that is a permanent timestamp of every completed transaction. With each block completed, miners are rewarded cryptocurrency tokens. This releases more tokens into circulation.

(5) The completed block is linked to the previous block to create the blockchain. Each block is part of the public ledger that creates a permanent record. The data in the blockchain is interlocked, making it impossible to alter without modifying all of the preceding blocks.

MINING FOR BITCOIN

Bitcoin supply was capped at 21 million tokens by its pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The value was established at less than one cent per token. Once bitcoins were purchased, it put into motion the blockchain technology. The amount of tokens available for circulation is based on complex mathematical equations solved with Bitcoin software, where the codes are stored.

In 2009, Bitcoin was created with the “Genesis block,” the first block mined. It was mined almost immediately with a single computer. Initially, miners were rewarded with 50 bitcoins per block, but the rewards are halved approximately every four years, based on the number of miners.

Today, with approximately 3 million bitcoins left to be mined, mining is 21.4 trillion times as difficult, requiring massive, specialized computers. Even though miners receive a fraction of a bitcoin for each block mined, the rewards can be lucrative because of the value of a bitcoin.

CRYPTOCURRENCY WALLETSCryptocurrency is not kept in bank accounts like conventional money. It’s kept in cryptocurrency wallets, which are secure software programs designed to keep track of funds. Each wallet contains one or more private keys – secret numbers – that are saved in the wallet file and allow the cryptocurrency to be spent. Private keys allow you to move funds out of your account. Public keys allow others to receive funds. Each cryptocurrency has its own unique keys.

Cold walletsThese wallets are the preferred storage method for people with a significant amount of tokens because they are not connected to the internet. They are physical devices.

Hot walletsThese wallets are connected to the internet and are free with exchange websites such as Coinbase or Kraken. Hot wallets aren’t physical; they are software that can be installed on your devices or in the cloud.

THE RISE OF BITCOINBitcoin hit a record high last week, reaching a total value of $1 trillion. While some analysts have warned that it is it a poor hedge against the fall of stock prices, Bitcoin’s gains have been fueled by signs it is winning acceptance among mainstream investors and companies, from Tesla and Mastercard to BNY Mellon. University endowments at Harvard, Dartmouth, Stanford, Michigan State and MIT have also invested in Bitcoin.

A new type of cryptocurrency called SafeMoon is gathering interest amongst enthusiasts, search trends show.

Little is known about the cryptocurrency so far, though developers have held live Ask Me Anything (AMA) meetings to answer some questions.

Launched this month, SafeMoon claims it will reward people who buy and hold on to the cryptocurrency and issue a penalty to those who sell it on.

Its Facebook page states: "Remember, getting to the moon takes time and the longer you hold the more tokens you pick up."

Going "to the moon" is a phrase popularized in recent times by the WallStreetBets community on Reddit, who use it in reference to an asset price soaring.

The mechanism by which SafeMoon rewards participants involves issuing a 10 percent penalty tax fee on sellers and redistributing five percent of this to people who already own the currency.

One Reddit user claimed a whitepaper—a report that highlights the features of a product such as a cryptocurrency—is available on the website, but others said they had trouble accessing it.

The SafeMoon website appeared to be down at the time Newsweek tried to load it. The organization said website issues may occur due to "unexpected" demand.

To buy SafeMoon, cryptocurrency users have to buy a Binance Coin (BNB) first, and then essentially swap it for SafeMoon.

First, users must set up a crypto wallet in which their coins can be kept. For SafeMoon, either Trust or Metamask are the two wallets the organization says should be used.

SafeMoon states: "Set up your wallet to work on the Binance Chain Network. Buy BNB on your Binance account.

"Withdraw BNB to your wallet address and be sure to select the BSC Network (BEP20). Visit pancake swap. Connect your wallet to pancake swap. Before you swap please ensure you click the gear icon and set slippage to 11%. Press swap. Confirm the transaction on your wallet and hold!"

Some cryptocurrency enthusiasts are excited about the coin, whilst some are skeptical.

One reddit user said: "I completely agree that once they get listed on an exchange this could easily blow up."

YouTuber Xpod78 in a buying guide said: "This is so incredibly risky, this is like the top bar of risk you can get. Fully expect to lose every single dollar you put into it; I feel like that disclaimer is much needed."

India is introducing new cryptocurrency disclosure rules. Effective today, any company that deals in cryptocurrencies will have to disclose their entire crypto holdings to the government as part of their financial statements.

According to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), a state regulatory authority on corporate affairs in India, every company that “has traded or invested in cryptocurrency or virtual currency during the financial year” is now obligated to disclose all cryptocurrency holdings, total profits and losses, and deposits or advances received from anyone trading or investing in cryptocurrencies.

Reports by local media indicate that the latest MCA regulation is being welcomed by cryptocurrency-associated firms in India, as they believe it would legitimize cryptocurrency transactions. Industry insiders also say the new disclosure laws indicate that the government is looking at regulating the industry rather than an outright cryptocurrency ban.

“In light of the recent speculation around ban, allowing cryptocurrencies to be a part of accounting practices will definitely put investors at ease as they no longer have to be worried regarding taxation,” said Monark Modi, founder and CEO of Indian cryptocurrency exchange Bitex. “This is a definite endorsement, and it is good to see that India is not falling behind the global cryptocurrency race. Bringing regulation that provides safety to investors, factors taxation and fosters cryptocurrency as an alternate investment class will be the right step ahead.”

The MCA crypto regulation comes at a time of legal ambiguity for cryptocurrencies in India. In January 2021, the Indian government introduced a bill into its parliament that proposed a ban on cryptocurrencies except for the digital currency that the RBI plans to issue in the future.

The messages from the government on what the cryptocurrency ban means for the industry have been mixed. On March 15, Reuters reported that the trading, mining, issuance and possession of cryptocurrencies are expected to be criminalized in India under the upcoming legislative bill.

In the same report, however, the minister of finance and corporate affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman offered cryptocurrency investors some reassurance that the government was taking a balanced approach to the regulation and was “not shutting all options.” From complete ban to regulation, there are many competing theories as to what actual intentions the Indian government has for cryptocurrencies following the MCA cryptocurrency disclosure legislation. The fact that the government has asked for disclosures appears to many that the move may be to regulate rather than ban cryptocurrencies.

India’s crypto industry has led a concerted effort to counter the government’s attempts to ban crypto. Industry leaders have been trying to make the case that a full crypto ban would hurt not only crypto users and the nation’s unbanked but could potentially harm a slew of other business in the country as well. In a November 2020 RBI Bulletin, the central bank said there were 342 crypto products and services in India.

The overall popularity of virtual assets like Bitcoin is also sky-high in India. According to a 2018 report by Quartz, one in every 10 bitcoin purchases in the world happened in India. The country is also the second-largest source of web traffic to peer-to-peer bitcoin trading platform Paxful. Additionally, India is ranked 11th in a 2020 report by Chainalysis that lists global cryptocurrency adoption by nation.

Jeremy Britton, the CFO of BostonCoin, told Forkast.News he believes efforts to ban cryptocurrency in India will prove futile. 

“India putting a crypto ban is not going to make people stop using crypto. It’s just going to make people use crypto illegally,” Britton said. “That’s going to make people distrust the government. And they know the entire world is using this […] it’s not going to stop people doing it. In fact, it’ll have the opposite effect.”

Due to crypto’s surging popularity both in India and globally, Britton said, “the government is fighting a losing battle and they will look very, very silly trying to ban crypto. Whereas other countries such as China tried to ban crypto in 2018, they let it go, then they banned it again and let it go and banned it again.”

India has a checkered history with cryptocurrency, and its own government has had oscillating attitudes toward either banning or regulating virtual currencies like Bitcoin. Many top Indian officials have reportedly labelled cryptocurrency a “Ponzi scheme.”

In 2013, just days after the first crypto exchange opened its doors in India — the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), immediately issued a warning to citizens on the risks of investing in cryptocurrencies.

In April 2018, the RBI prohibited India’s banks from providing services to crypto exchanges and businesses dealing with digital assets. India’s crypto industry was outraged and challenged the barring of bank services in court. But the crypto banking ban was lifted in March 2020 when India’s Supreme Court ruled against the RBI.

Despite the RBI remaining skeptical about cryptocurrency, the central bank has continued to encourage India’s banks to leverage blockchain technology and is also currently exploring the possibility of issuing a central bank digital currency backed by the Indian rupee.

“It’s about who controls cryptocurrency in India more than anything else. Because the Reserve Bank of India just keeps on promoting digitization, and they want to have a CBDC,” said Indian born cryptocurrency investor Sagar Sethi, the founder of digital marketing agency Xugar, in an interview with Forkast.News. “They are backing it [cryptocurrency] on one front — they’re backing digital currency and digitizing their own currency.”

Sethi also believes that an outright cryptocurrency ban would likely fail in India. “Digitization is also at its peak. The government keeps on promoting digitizing their own departments,” Sethi said. “If you really look at where the economy is going in correlation to what India wants to do, it’s more the control that needs to be put in place, or that’s what the government is trying to do. At most, regulations will be at its peak, regulations will keep on coming. But banning cryptocurrency in India, I don’t think that’s possible.That will never happen.”

Grayscale, the world’s largest cryptocurrency asset manager, has announced the launch of five new digital currency investment trusts to expand its offerings. The company now has a total of 14 investment products.

According to the official press release, Grayscale has expanded its portfolio with Basic Attention Token (BAT), Chainlink (LINK), Decentraland (MANA), Filecoin (FIL) and Livepeer (LPT) investment trusts. The cryptocurrency assets surged significantly following the news as BAT, FIL and MANA jumped by more than 20% in the last 24 hours.

The biggest surge was reported in LPT as the cryptocurrency asset posted nearly 200% gains within a single day. LINK, the world’s 10th largest cryptocurrency gained around 8% in the last 24 hours. The overall market cap of digital currencies now stands at around $1.8 trillion.

Commenting on the recent announcement, Michael Sonnenshein, CEO of Grayscale, said: “Digital currencies have reached an inflection point. Investor demand has never been higher, and every day we’re seeing new entrants to what has surely become a bona fide asset class. Grayscale has long been the leader in creating novel pathways for investors to access the opportunities that digital currencies may offer, and this announcement carries on that tradition. Grayscale is the largest institutional holder of Bitcoin. The asset manager now has $43.6 billion worth of cryptocurrency assets under management. Grayscale has more than 655,000 Bitcoin under management with a total value of nearly $38 billion. The company recently accelerated its accumulation of Ethereum with the addition of more than 40,000 ETH in the last 30 days. The total value of Grayscale’s ETH assets under management stands at around $5.8 billion.

In addition to Bitcoin and Ethereum, Grayscale has Litecoin, BCH, Ethereum Classic, ZEC, ZEN and XLM investment trusts. The firm recently announced the consideration of 23 cryptocurrency assets for new investment products.

Cryptocurrencies are attracting a lot of attention because they are promising to replace trusted long-standing institutions.  For clarity, trusted long-standing institutions are commercial banks, central banks, and other authorities who have been serving customers and individuals with monetary transactions.

If we need to look beyond the hype, we need to see if cryptocurrencies will be able to play any role as a money without trusted institutions by way of the blockchain technology and distributed ledger technology (DLT).

Crypto enthusiasts keep repeatedly pointing to historical events like episodes of monetary instability and stories of failed currencies.  This failure they attribute to the problems, which exist in the institutional arrangements.

Money is about trust and stability of value.  It coordinates transactions.  Money should be able to scale providing for the fluctuating demand for money when there is an increase in the numbers of transactions. To help with scaling and to balance the demand for money with increased transactions there is a need for institutional arrangements and this is one reason for why there are Central Banks providing for the accountability factor.

Financial institutions who feel threatened by the coming of cryptocurrencies have been discussing about the “economic limitations” which is inherent in the process of “decentralization of trust.”

In a decentralized network, if trust should be maintained, majority of the node operators should be honest, the supply should be determined by the protocol, and every user should be able to verify the history of transactions.

There is also a reported risk of a particular cryptocurrency completely stopping to function and therefore causing issues related to finality of individual payments. This can mean complete loss of value. The cryptocurrency technology so far is one which consumes lot of energy, and when the cryptocurrency protocol is not able to provide for the transaction demand, the value can fluctuate greatly in value. Thus, financial experts feel that cryptocurrency is not a good substitute for money backed by solid institutions.

However, majority of them agree that the technology will be able to simplify the administrative process of settling financial settlements; however, this also requires more testing. Perhaps, cryptocurrency will be around for a long time; however, after regulation and policy making which permits is private use. Several delicate issues like preventing the abuse of the cryptocurrency technology should be dealt with due measures.

History has shown several attempts of creating new and private moneys. All of these are happening in an attempt to come up with a better money type than what we already have.  Maybe, for now, the big guys say crypto cannot substitute institutional money.

Grayscale has established itself as the institutional choice of investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin in absence of a Bitcoin ETF in the US. The Grayscale Bitcoin Trust is one of the most sought-after trust funds in the US at present.

As evident from the comments of the CEO of the crypto management firm, Grayscale is looking to expand its product offering to about 30 to 40 products. The current launch of cryptocurrency trusts for five cryptocurrencies seems to be part of the expansion plans. The latest launch takes the total number of products to 13 with Bitcoin trust holding the largest share worth $34 billion.

There were rumors of a possible Grayscale Link Trust but many were taken by surprise with the inclusion of Filecoin, a storage token. US Securities and Exchange Commission is yet to fully approve Bitcoin ETFs having only acknowledged VanEck’s filing for a $5 trillion ETF to date. The federal agency faces several ETFs that are waiting for approval, but the SEC’s rejection of 10 such Funds received criticism from Commissioner Hester Peirce again. 

Peirce who is popularly known as ‘Crypto Mom’ said  that approving Bitcoin ETFs has been long overdue. 

Meanwhile, two of the largest cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ether have performed exceptionally well with a price hike of 823.6% and 1266.3%, respectively. Among growing retail interest, which saw the global crypto population cross 100 million users, corporates are showing increasing interest too. For example, payments network giant Visa decided to settle transactions in USDC over the Ethereum blockchain. 

As interest grows in crypto assets, new Bitcoin ETF applications could find their way to the Commission again. Peirce said that when SEC reviews these applications “on its facts and circumstances,” she revealed that people are looking at “past rejections to try to figure out what it is they need to answer.” 

According to Peirce, Bitcoin’s price performance is not the SEC’s “business.” She thinks that the “bigger driver” is that retailers can access Bitcoin and Ether through “a lot of avenues” or “other ways”  that are now available. She added: 

And I guess the question will be at what point do we start to say: “Wait a minute, retail investors are accessing this stuff in other ways. Would it be better for us just to allow them to access it through these more standard exchange-traded products that are more familiar?”

But SEC of Brazil recently approved the first Bitcoin ETF in the Latin American region. This regulatory approval marked the second time a traditional exchange decided to list a Bitcoin ETF after the launch of three Bitcoin ETFs in Canada this year.

Peirce said she could not predict the Commission’s stance on ETFs in the future as “the standard” that SEC has applied “is different” from what has been applied “to other types of products.” However, she noted that “a new chairman” could “rethink the approach” to help approve exchange-traded products. 

While many in the crypto sector are looking forward to the crypto-friendly Gary Gensler’s appointment, Peirce said that it was “important to manage expectations:”

I think it’s really wonderful to have someone coming in who knows the industry quite well and has spent time interacting with people who are actually building stuff. He’s going to have a very busy agenda—much of which will have nothing to do with crypto. So it is important to manage expectations a bit. But I do think that he is someone who is sympathetic to the call for regulatory clarity.

The nonprofit foundation behind the privacy-driven messaging app Signal is officially joining the cryptocurrency venture. In this case, the Signal Foundation announced it has started accepting crypto donations.

According to an announcement via Twitter, the organization encouraged people to arrange donations via cryptocurrencies, but it’s not limited to bitcoin (BTC) or ethereum (ETH).

Per their landing page, the foundation also supports litecoin (LTC), chainlink (LINK), zcash (ZEC), amp (AMP), Basic Attention Token (BAT), dai (DAI), gemini dollar (GUSD), storj (STORJ), and 0x (ZRX).

The addition of privacy coins comes in response to a number of social media users asking Signal to add such cryptos to “comply” with their privacy-driven philosophy.

A tweet from Signal reads:

As a nonprofit organization, we depend on your support. If you’ve been patiently waiting for Signal to accept cryptocurrency donations, you no longer need to hodl back your generosity.

Regarding the crypto payment processor used, the Signal Foundation stated it will handle all payments via The Giving Block, a company specialized in processing crypto donations for nonprofit organizations.

Moreover, the team behind the Signal app pointed out that those who want to claim U.S. tax deduction can optionally “provide an email address to receive a tax receipt.”

The foundation further clarified that The Giving Block supports anonymous donations.

Signal, created in 2018 by Moxie Marlinspike and Brian Acton, is a well-known privacy messaging app with more than strong encryption features.

In fact, the app has received mainstream endorsement globally from crypto-friendly personalities, such as American whistleblower Edward Snowden, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, and Tesla Technoking Elon Musk, who recently encouraged his Twitter followers to start using it.

Recently, due to the controversy sparked by Whatsapp changing its terms and conditions, Signal’s user base skyrocketed in a matter of hours.
