In a significant move for Japanese cryptocurrency patriotism, exchange bitFlyer has added Monacoin (MONA) trading to its platform. It will allow direct trading between JPY and MONA, without having to trade via BTC. The platform also has trading in BTC and BCC, ETH and ETC, and LTC. BitFlyer is one of the oldest and most popular digital asset exchanges still operating in Japan. It’s arguably also the most prominent public face of Bitcoin in Japan, thanks to a long-running TV ad and poster campaign. At the beginning of October it became the third exchange to obtain an operating license from Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA). Japanese exchange Zaif also trades MONA, though curiously altcoin-friendly Coincheck doesn’t. But what is Monacoin? It first launched at the end of 2013, and picked up a lot of buzz with its cat emoji logo and online following on Japanese message boards like 2channel. Local media picked up the “like Bitcoin, but made in Japan” narrative in 2014, and it became part of the country’s post-Gox crypto mystique. At one point, TV news even reported a real estate deal paid in MONA. Like most altcoins, mainstream interest waned after that, but MONA experienced a new price boom in 2017. It’s currently worth about $0.80 USD, and there are several online marketplaces and gaming sites that accept it as payment for all manner of products, like the Monacoin cookie pictured above. Monacoin’s other claim to fame is as the first cryptocurrency to activate SegWit — in April 2017, just ahead of Litecoin. The cryptocurrency market has been consolidating after the market’s latest price rally. While not all coins sustained bullish trends, a few altcoins, however, were eyeing a potential move upwards in a bid to surpass previously breached resistances. The silver crypto recorded a decline of 0.02% over a period of 24-hours. At press time, was priced at $38.86 with a market cap of $2.50 billion and a 24-hour trading volume of $3.20 billion. Resistance: $63.37, $79.68 Support: $30.95 MACD: The MACD line was above the signal line, suggesting a bullish trend for the silver crypto in the near-term. CMF: The CMF also pointed towards a highly bullish phase for Litecoin. MonaCoin is a Japanese cryptocurrency that has been growing in popularity as an alternative to bitcoin. It was given the name after Mona the cat, a popular character in Japan that is often used in cartoons and anime. Despite the name and logo, it has been a seriously profitable cryptocurrency lately, and everyone is paying attention. Unlike other cryptocurrencies that have a whitepaper and a team of experts behind it, MonaCoin does not. In fact, the actual creator is not known. Just like bitcoin was first proposed by Satoshi Nakamoto, a pseudonym, this cryptocurrency too was created by Mr. Watanabe, which is also a pseudonym in Japan. Furthermore, it was only initially used as a joke – a way to congratulate someone on 2channel forums. Since then, it has acquired a lot of other uses, including acting as a currency in Japan where the practice is legal. Its use in cafes and restaurants has now become common in certain areas of Japan. Its original function among gamers too has remained and it is still often used for shopping electronics. It uses a unique mining system, though, known as Lyra2RE (v2) similar to that of Vertcoin (VTC). There are about 56 million MONA in circulation and a maximum supply of 105 million. Yesterday, MonaCoin’s market cap surpassed the $1 billion hurdle before correcting downward to its current $924 million market cap. At the same time, prices spiked to an all-time high of $19.82 according to Coinmarketcap. On the 1st of December, each coin was worth $6.16, giving it more than a 200% growth rate in under a week. This most recent price surge came after Japan’s Financial Services Agency allowed it to be listed on four more exchanges in Japan. Upon the news, the trading volume of bitcoin on Xtheta increased and even surpassed that of bitcoin. So far, Monacoin has been limited to Japan only and there has been very little trading outside the island. The ‘Galapagos effect’ seems to have taken over to propel the coin to among the most popular cryptocurrencies in the world. Japan is in itself a major cryptocurrency market, and they have in the past also favoured their own products. Take Facebook, for example, which the Japanese had ignored in favour of their own Mixi. The case of Monacoin seems to be the same as that, where the Japanese are enthusiastic about it simply because it is their own. The problem with this cryptocurrency is that it is limited only to the Japanese market. Although huge, it is not enough to compete against other great cryptocurrencies like Ripple, Litecoin, IOTA and even Bitcoin. I don’t see much utility in it either, which makes me think that it is really only a passing trend that will fade away in 2018. For now, it may have some more time in the limelight, perhaps even make it to the top 10, but it won’t stay there for long. I'm happy to report significant gains with all of the previous coins I have written about, but that's no big deal since the market has been in a massive growth cycle for a few months now. If it's too complicated, it probably won't be widely adopted. If it smells like a scam, it probably is one. Well we have that out of the way, let's talk Japan. For a long time, Japan's young population has been enthralled and obsessed with anime. Spanning across action mangas, teen stories, into Kawaii and DESU DESU territory, we've all seen the booming culture of Japanese Drawn Art. It's not just Japan either, it's the whole world! Yes and No. Of course, meme's being defined as "The smallest unit of an idea," it's easy to see it's usefulness in marketing, and thus overall adoption. But there has to be an underlying structure to build upon to make the project something unique. For MONA, the underlying structure is the rampant surge of Bitcoin supporters. They used the industry of cryptos, and the fact that ATM's are being used more widely, to distribute an alternative to Bitcoin. Not just an alternative, but a cute and kawaii alternative. This electronics store adopted the currency for payment, Who would choose to pay in Mona? Who would choose to pay in Bitcoin? All I know is, if they've built their payment gateway to be this strong, the coin is currently undervalued. This is just my perspective though! I held a small amount for a while, and have recently picked up more in the dip a few hours ago. I'm looking at holding this coin for 3-4 months and seeing where the industry is at with microtransactions. I'm looking at India .. hint hint ..
