A few months back, we released Client-Side Raindrop (hereto “Raindrop”) on the Hydrogen API, an authentication scheme that leverages several of the major security guarantees provided by the Ethereum blockchain.Raindrop combines the robustness of a public-key crypto system with an immutable on-chain identity protocol to provide off-chain authentication in an incontestable manner. Since the initial Raindrop release, we have continued to pose questions and look at novel applications for our authentication solution.Although Raindrop inherits many of its security properties from the blockchain, the authentication process itself occurs almost entirely off-chain. The off-chain nature of Raindrop authentication makes it immediately useful for many existing centralized portals and applications, but extensibility, to on-chain applications, is a bit more tricky. Since there is no native mechanism for porting off-chain data onto the blockchain, using Raindrop to enhance the security of dApp security was difficult, but we were determined to find a solution.Thankfully, projects like Chainlink exist, a company that we announced a partnership with in November.Chainlink is a decentralized oracle platform built on Ethereum. The Chainlink team has built a system of smart contracts and middleware that seamlessly connects the blockchain to off-chain data sources.With Chainlink, off-chain information can be routed onto the Ethereum blockchain in a secure, efficient, and decentralized manner. Through our Chainlink integration, developers can now seamlessly embed our off-chain Raindrop authentication solution directly within their decentralized application infrastructure.For our first application, our awesome blockchain intern, Matt, developed a HYDRO wallet protected with Raindrop for multi-factor authentication. This will allow the Hydro Open-Source Community to create a P2P application, like Venmo, with blockchain based identity and validation.Currently, there are two prominent wallet solutions available on Ethereum:(1) There is your typical Ethereum address. Storing funds here leaves you exposed to phishing attacks. If your tokens are stored in your Ethereum address, and someone manages to steal your private key, they will have uninhibited access to your funds. That is very bad!(2) An alternative solution is to set up a multi-sig wallet. Multi-sig wallets are smart contracts that require explicit authorization from several Ethereum addresses in order to execute a transaction. Multi-sigs are arguably safer, but they complicate user experience significantly, by forcing you to manage multiple keys at once. Multi-sig wallets also introduce additional existential risks in the form of key loss. If you ever lose access to some of your keys, your funds are most likely irretrievable.Our Raindrop-Chainlink wallet provides a novel middle-ground between key management, user experience, and fund security.Our wallet allows users to securely make HYDRO withdrawals up to a daily limit that you set. Transactions exceeding the daily limit trigger Raindrop authentication before execution. With Large Financial and Tech Partnerships Secured This Year, Is Hydrogen the Next Ripple? December 10, 2018 Hydrogen has signed long-term deals with financial giants TD Bank and Principal Financial, and secured a tech partnership with Oracle for the full use of their API suite including their public blockchain token $HYDRO. Blockchain education and current habits seem to be the largest roadblocks to further crypto adoption. The most successful tokens will most likely be the ones bridging the gap between the old Web 2.0 and the coming Web 3.0. Ripple currently leads the adoption race, as they announced earlier this year that their first real-world commercial use of their token XRP would be implemented by financial firms Mercury FX, Cuallix and Catalyst Federal Credit Union. This follows on the heels of testing programs with private blockchain integrations with Western Union, Santander and MoneyGram. The team at Hydrogen has also been partnering with large institutions exploring blockchain usage through their private API offerings. Their deal with TD Bank involves improving the investment experience for customers with Hydrogen’s financial APIs, including future integration of their public blockchain token project HYDRO. In this article, we will discuss how bitcoin can be hacked. Bitcoin [BTC] runs on blockchain technology, in fact, it is the first successful decentralized application of the technology which has been around for quite some time. Essentially, a blockchain is a secure way of database management. The transactions are recorded on a single unified ledger which avoids double-spending and mutation of the balances. These transactions are verified across a distributed network of miners/nodes which are incentivized by Bitcoin [BTC] rewards. The second layer of security to the ecosystem is provided by cryptography. The public and private addresses are encrypted by a hashing algorithm (SHA-256 for Bitcoin). This encryption can be solved only by a hit and trial method which requires high computing power.  Moreover, each transaction is confirmed across a network of distributed miners. Hence, weeding out malicious nodes by the majority. These features shield the network against possible attacks on the blockchain. The technology has been secure and unaffected since its inception in 2009.  Theoretically, however, Bitcoins’ blockchain can be attacked in the following ways,  As mentioned above, Bitcoin [BTC] works on a distributed consensus of miners powered by the PoW (Proof of Work) protocol. This network of miners independently verify the transactions and reach consensus, weeding out the bad players in the process.  However, if an entity is able to gain control of more than 50% of the network’s total hash rate, it can make changes to the existing blocks, and even confirm malicious transactions. This is termed as the 51% attack which is precisely similar to what happens with the power of control for companies. Moreover, the larger the company or mining ecosystem, the larger amount of investment is required to take over the blockchain.  Let’s assume the total hash-rate of Bitcoin at 100 M TH/s. Hence, to conduct a 51% attack, the attacker will need to control 51 Million TH/s of the network. Even with the most efficient and new generation of miners in MicroBT’s forthcoming M30 series of Bitcoin miners, the MS30S++ and the MS30S+, the cost would be very high. The hardware alone would cost around $1.5-$2 billion. Moreover, these attacks have an hourly cost, which as we see is very high. The cost will further increase post halving when the difficulty is increased. New miners could soon join the system to protect it from attacks. The hourly electricity cost of the attack is estimated at over $1.6 million. Furthermore, As the attacks get rampant, the sell-off in the markets will increase, which will make the attack futile by dropping the price of the cryptocurrency.  Quantum computers are ushering a wave of computing which relies on quantum mechanics, rather than the original electronic bits or signals. The basis of all electronic transactions today is based on the storage and manipulation of two states of these bits 0 or 1. Quantum computers, on the other hand, use qubits – or ‘quantum bits’ can have more states than just 0 or 1. These physical qubits are created using principles of quantum mechanics and superconductivity. IBM, Google, and leading world universities like MIT are working on designing these computers which can theoretically even hack the Bitcoin blockchain. But that is for the future. Samson Mow, leading Bitcoin dev and Chief Strategy Officer of Blockstream addressed the crowd at the Litecoin summit saying, “We’re at 53 qubits now but we would need about 3,000 and then another million to do something meaningful. In the time that we develop quantum computing ASICs will advance as well.” Apart from developing compatible ASICs, there is also the argument of Bitcoin difficulty adjustment which occurs every 2016 blocks. Hence, if the systems are able to mine 2016 in a jiffy, the upcoming difficult adjustment would be equivalently large. For most parts, the technology is still in the initial stages, and to build a larger scale of things it will require about a million physical qubits to stabilize and work efficiently, which hasn’t really been tested yet. The estimated time-frame for building such a system is at least a decade away. During that time, Bitcoin devs and proponents can be expected to build resistance to these systems or develop quantum ASICs which compete with each other.  Even Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum noted on the launch of Google’s first system, Sycomore, that ‘quantum computing’ is an experimental concept that has a long way to go before actual use. He tweeted, My one-sentence impression of recent quantum supremacy stuff so far is that it is to real quantum computing what hydrogen bombs are to nuclear fusion. Proof that a phenomenon and the capability to extract power from it exist, but still far from direct use toward useful things. Nevertheless, make no mistake, it is not just a theory, because the theory has been around for decades. However, since 87% of the Bitcoins have already been mined, even if the quantum computers are able to crack the code, the increase in supply will only be momentary. If anything it will make Bitcoin verifications transfers faster and more cost-efficient in the long-run. However, the threat is not only contained to mining, but also to the extent that one could recover a private key from the public key from cryptography. Hence, the first part of the quantum computer attacks would begin with individual keys rather than the entire network. This process is called reverse engineering. It will seek to crack the encryption coding the private address from the public addresses. The public address can be obtained simply by exploring the open-source ledger. The list of top Bitcoin addresses includes exchanges with more than 100, 000 BTC in their cold storage, and even individual owners with around 30,000-100,000 BTC.  Reportedly, there are numerous Bitcoins [BTC] private keys which have been lost in the course of time. According to some of the best estimates, the total number is around 1.6 million bitcoins (or 7.61% of the total supply) which is significant for a scarce asset like Bitcoin. Hence, there is a lot of incentive to crack these individual addresses, which is easier than attacking the entire network. The two attacks described above are the attacks on the blockchain itself, which are not likely with today’s technology. In the current world, users are more vulnerable to attacks on their devices, wallets and exchanges which serve the blockchain.  There have been numerous attacks on these service providers in the last 11 years. Beginning with Mt. Gox in 2013, space has been riddled with exchange and wallet related hacks. Nevertheless, while the blockchain itself is always protected against these attacks, the users or investors can take these steps to secure their funds.  Last but not least, there are various pyramid schemes, giveaway scams, and online mining scams which requires sending cryptocurrencies to a schemer. This has been so successful that Kaspar Korjus, who's in charge of the scheme, revealed this week that the numbers signing up exceeded Estonia's birth rate. He wants to take advantage of this wave of interest by offering e-residents digital tokens that could be used when they access various services or make transfers between businesses. He accepts that this is quite a far-fetched idea and there would have to be discussions with all sorts of government bodies. I can imagine Estonia's central bank might be dubious about having a whole new currency running alongside the euro. Crypto-currency enthusiasts may also be wary of a scheme that runs counter to the whole libertarian ethos behind bitcoin and its imitators. But Mr Korjus tells us governments cannot just sit back and watch this new financial technology take shape: "Instead of trying to stop things, like usual, governments do need to find ways to regulate and enhance systems which already work and which people like." One reason for wading in is that crypto-currencies could be used to avoid tax or for money laundering. By tying estcoins to a digital identity, Estonia would hope to avoid that. But it seems shoppers are finding it harder to spot the difference in new phones. "From a hardware perspective, the innovation is not as obvious," says Carolina Milanesi. "There's a lot of innovation that comes from software, which is not as apparent to consumers." Phones like the Note 8 and the iPhone 8, which is expected in late September, are almost bound to be hits. But as the prices climb ever higher, consumers may think their existing phones are good enough for a few months more. Is hydrogen the future of clean power? This week, we dropped in on an event called Hydrogen Hack that aims to get young people to build electronics projects powered by fuel cells. Among the gadgets we saw were an internet-connected weather station that can display temperature and wind speed. The company behind the event, Arcola Energy, is based in a theatre in East London, and grew out of a sustainability project a decade ago. Arlan Harris from the firm told us: "We believe hydrogen is the future of energy - it's clean at the point of use, you can generate it locally, and we believe it is the best chance we have for a low-carbon future." Hydrogen fuel cells have their advocates, though for many uses, critics insist that rechargeable batteries make more sense. Snowmo.io received huge attention from the Crypto Twitter community after being released by its creator Noah, as it projects some of the most fundamental necessities a digital wallet must have. It involves a secure identity feature ERC1484 or Snowflake, and a secure p2p payment (Tide) protocol using the blockchain technology. Snowmo.io is on the Rinkeyby Testnet that gives us a preview of how Snowflake coupled with Tide work hand in hand.  Snowmo is a demo and a proof of concept (PoC) of the Tide protocol and Snowflake protocol of Project Hydro. In short, Tide is the P2P or payment protocol while Snowflake is the identity protocol of Project Hydro. ERC1484 has already been proposed and recognized by the Ethereum Community. In Snowmo.io, the Tide protocol is coupled with Snowflake (EIN) giving us a look of how multiple smart contracts will run in the ecosystem of Hydro. Snowmo was designed by Noah, the previous blockchain engineer of Hydrogen (parent company and creator of the Project Hydro). If you thought the cryptocurrency mining boom only affected your ability to find a graphics card that is faster than a potato, you'd be wrong. According to a recent report, scientists are hitting a brick wall in trying to secure orders for the hardware they need - that is when they are not getting busted for using Russian supercomputers for mining - to answer one of the most fundamental questions humanity has: are we alone in the universe? Researchers at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) have recently set out to expand operations at two observatories. However, due to the demand for GPUs, these plans have in part been set on hold. Scientists use GPUs due to its immense computing capability especially when working with large amounts of data. However, for those using them to mine cryptocurrencies, it's a fundamental part of any profitable operation. According to Dr. Werthimer, this phenomenon has only recently become a problem: "We'd like to use the latest GPUs, and we can't get 'em. That's limiting our search for extra-terrestrials, to try to answer the question, 'Are we alone? Is there anybody out there?'. This is a new problem, it's only happened on orders we've been trying to make in the last couple of months." Other scientific institutions have been affected as well. Several expansion plans are under pressure due to the shortage. The Hydrogen Epoch of Reionisation Array (HERA) telescope located in South Africa has had to double its budget for GPUs due to rising costs. According to the report, it had aimed to acquire cards that cost around $500 each, however, the price for the same GPU doubled to $1,000. According to Professor Parsons - who manages the HERA telescope -, it will be able to weather the storm, but the expansion will end up costing around $32,000 more than initially planned. The aforementioned telescope listens to low-frequency radio waves emitted by hydrogen before the first galaxies formed in the early universe. In the past year alone, gamers have all but formed a mob around AMD and Nvidia's headquarters over the rising costs of hardware. Retailers have reportedly had a tough time keeping stock around long enough so that everyone could get their hands on one at a reasonable price. In the case of the most popular cards - the GTX 1070 Ti, and GTX 1080 Ti - prices have more than doubled. Seti (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) researchers want to expand operations at two observatories. However, they have found that key computer chips are in short supply. "We'd like to use the latest GPUs [graphics processing units]... and we can't get 'em," said Dan Werthimer. Demand for GPUs has soared recently thanks to crypto-currency mining. "That's limiting our search for extra-terrestrials, to try to answer the question, 'Are we alone? Is there anybody out there?'," Dr Werthimer told the BBC. "This is a new problem, it's only happened on orders we've been trying to make in the last couple of months." Mining a currency such as Bitcoin or Ethereum involves connecting computers to a global network and using them to solve complex mathematical puzzles. This forms part of the process of validating transactions made by people who use the currency. As a reward for this work, the miners receive a small crypto-currency payment, making it potentially profitable. GPUs are high-performance chips and aren't just used for powering video games - they may be stacked together by Bitcoin miners, radio-astronomers or others interested in processing large amounts of data for certain applications. "At Seti we want to look at as many frequency channels as we possibly can because we don't know what frequency ET will be broadcasting on and we want to look for lots of different signal types - is it AM or FM, what communication are they using?" explained Dr Werthimer, who is chief scientist at the Berkeley Seti Research Center. "That takes a lot of computing power." He added that, at some telescopes, Berkeley Seti has around 100 GPUs crunching data from large listening arrays. These arrays can pick up the faintest of radio frequencies that have been flung across our solar system from elsewhere in the universe - often from natural phenomena such as collapsing stars. The Seti scientists are currently trying to improve their capacity for analysing such data at two observatories - Green Bank in West Virginia and Parkes in Australia. But they have been hit by the GPU shortage. "We've got the money, we've contacted the vendors, and they say, 'We just don't have them'," said Dr Werthimer. Earlier this year, there were reports that video gamers had been hit by a sudden rise in the cost of GPUs, thanks in particular to a rise in Ethereum mining, which can be done with chips aimed at consumers. At the time, major chip-maker Nvidia said that retailers should make arrangements to make sure gamers' demands were met. In a conference call last week, Nvidia's chief executive told investors the company was "working really hard" to "catch up with supply" and get GPUs to the marketplace. Other radio-astronomers have been affected. A group looking for evidence of the earliest stars in the universe was recently shocked to see that the cost of the GPUs it wanted had doubled. "We're in the process of expanding our telescope - we got a grant from the National Science Foundation here in the United States to do so," said Aaron Parsons at the University of California at Berkeley. Prof Parsons' radio telescope, the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionisation Array (Hera), is an American, British and South African project located in South Africa's western plains. It has been designed to listen to low frequency radio waves emitted by the reionising hydrogen gas that permeated the universe before the first stars and galaxies formed. GPUs are needed in order to bring together data from Hera's many small radio telescopes - this synthesises a much larger array, offering an especially wide field of view peering out into the universe. Three months ago, the Hera team had budgeted for a set of GPUs that cost around $500 (£360) - the price has since doubled to $1,000. "We'll be able to weather it but it is coming out of our contingency budget." added Prof Parsons. "We're buying a lot of these things, it's going to end up costing about $32,000 extra." He also said he was concerned that future work could even be stopped in its tracks, should the GPU shortage worsen. Thanks in part to a recent boom in the price of crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, mining crypto-currencies has never been more popular. While Bitcoin miners have largely moved on to specialised "Asic" chips that have been designed from scratch to support mining, it's still possible to use GPUs on the Ethereum mining network to lucrative ends, according to cyber-security expert Matthew Hickey at Hacker House. "[You can] use GPUs effectively to turn a small profit, you're not going to make millions but if you put 12 or 24 GPUs together, you'll make back the cost in six months," he told the BBC. GPUs are versatile, he added, pointing out that cyber-security experts sometimes use them for password-cracking experiments, in which computers make many millions of attempts at breaking into a system. But Mr Hickey has also noticed that GPUs are now being sold on sites such as Ebay at inflated prices. "It's becoming increasingly difficult to find suppliers and cards," he said. The reports come amid global alarm over a suspected chemical attack in rebel-held Douma.

It appeared that the biggest impact was on gamers, who were struggling to upgrade their PCs, but in a report by the BBC, researchers from SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) have revealed that their plan to expand their operations are also being hampered.
